Mechanical Engineering DESIGN MANAGER

Role Description

The Design Manager is responsible for providing primary design input to multiple data centre design and construction projects, including coordination with the Construction and Programme/Project Management and site-based project, in-house management, commercial teams and external consultants to facilitate the timely completion of design information to meet internal and external design programme targets and for managing the design process from start to finish.

Core Responsibilities

  • Creating the Design Brief - Technical ownership of and coordination of the design process and output, management of the design process using, where appropriate, consultants, sub-contractors, external planning and technical expertise
  • Ensuring the design process takes account of current legislation, statutory requirements, standards and international codes of practice, particularly embedding HSE into design
  • Managing the delivery of the overall project construction/design requirements during the construction phase
  • Liaising with the commercial and design/construction teams regarding the selection and assessment of sub-contractors/consultants to ensure they are competent, qualified and capable of providing the required design input
  • Ensuring all design changes, value engineering, and other solutions are implemented into the project design documentation
  • Managing the development and implementation of design proposals ensuring they meet internal and external requirements, including taking account of budgetary constraints
  • Liaising with the programme/project planner; leading the development and management of the design delivery schedules for each design discipline and coordinating these with procurement and construction programmes
  • Liaising with the commercial team; lead the development and implementation of design proposals, data, bid deliverables and reports within both the constraints of the contract (inclusive of BIM requirements) and internal commercial objectives
  • Reviewing and monitoring construction/design processes, procedures and quality management plans
  • Management of any 3rd parties, sub-contractor CPD elements or novated design teams to ensure that they meet all specification, design interfaces are captured, and checking the competence and resources of any design teams or 3rd parties
  • Providing advice and guidance on the 'buildability' of the design proposals to the design and construction teams
  • Identifying Design Risk and ensuring Design Risk Assessments are created and appropriately maintained for each project and that risks are managed and mitigated
  • Managing allocated resources within projects and producing project design programmes to assist in project resource planning
  • Collating and managing contract specifications, drawings and related documents
  • Carrying out drawing reviews and ensuring all appropriate comments/observations are added to the design
  • Carrying out technical reviews to ensure contractual and technical compliance
  • Preparing and managing the Design and Procurement schedule and issuing information release schedules to set design target dates
  • Input into the procurement process
  • Ensuring coordination of the M&E installation and commissioning process
  • Coordinating the submission of information to satisfy Building Control compliance
  • Coordinating the submission of information to satisfy all planning conditions are discharged.
  • Managing Design Change Proposals for sign-off
  • Submitting Design Information and recording, tracking and closing out any comments and queries that arise
  • Assisting in the collation of the O&M Health and Safety file.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Significant technical experience in DC's with a mechanical building services background
  • Excellent technical knowledge of UK design codes and international standards in particular ASHRAE
  • A desire to set the sustainability agenda through design engineering
  • A thorough understanding of the construction process from pre-construction/tender stages through to handover
  • The ability to challenge the status quo
  • Good interpersonal and team building skills
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentational skills
  • Working knowledge of building management systems and controls
  • Excellent IT skills (MS Office, MS Project, CAD (AutoCAD, AutoDESK, REVIT and other 3D modelling software)

Qualifications and Experience

  • Ideally a Masters degree in Mechanical or Environmental Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Chartered status - Desirable
  • Considerable experience as a design manager of high-value linear infrastructure construction projects, working for main contractors or consultants - Highly desirable
  • Experience of designing data centres, large distribution centres/warehouses or other similar projects - Desirable
  • Demonstrable experience of the application of international design standards across multiple countries.
  • Proven experience in delivering design services, successfully implanting design strategies as well as relevant project experience - Essential
  • Professional membership of an appropriate professional body - Highly desirable
  • Remote working/working from home
  • Driving licence
  • Occasional international travel.
